An Agnostic Parable

How do I show you,
What you evoke in me?

Beyond the beauty,
the love,
Emanating from your entire being,
Is Earth’s heart.

Beyond those eyes,
And soothing hands,
A labour of creation,
A calm wildfire.

Beyond the pain,
And the resilience,
The trials endured,
Reside’s humanity’s lifeline.

You evoke in me,
A yearning for your essence,
Unseen yet universal,
Intangible yet coursing.

Walking Alone

I walk this path,
On my shoulders,
Those who are with me now,
And those who have passed.

I carry them on every path,
Some are always there,
Some come and go,
Some are forgotten.

I pay no mind,
To how many there are,
They are weightless,
Resting on my shoulders.

When my steps falter,
When I stumble,
Or slow down,
They go to work.

Some crawl into my mind,
Some dive into my spirit,
Some wait to be called on,
To heal.

They are always there,
Pleading for attention,
They cannot do their work,
If they remain unacknowledged.

To be aware of them,
An act of self-love,
To acknowledge their presence,
An act of self-acceptance.

Returning to my shoulders,
They take their rightful place,
I am grateful for them,
Standing up,
I return to my path.

My Homes

There
There I exit a home
Onto a street
A perpetual noise
Warmth radiates from every surface
The wind is constant
The sea beautiful and vast
A mere distance away
Nothing too far
To be drowned at whim

I like it there
For many reasons
Mirth is passed from hand to hand
Not portioned and accounted
Smiles come as easily
As pain

Here
Here I exit a home
Onto a street
Quiet
The silence always a foreshadow
Overwhelms the scenery
Blank stares
Generalized coldness
I can make this work
This is my here
The water is tame
And far enough

I like it here
For many reasons
Peaceful and safer
So much space
Enough space to keep out
And be kept out
Effortlessly

Gatekeepers

With its perpetual gatekeepers
Self-championing
Panicked by sights
Of difference
Their flat affect
Flummoxed breathing
Pens clawing at writing pads
Frantic, mad inspectors

“Cannot be allowed”
Are you looking?
Gasp
Writing pads jerked
Closer to their hollowed out chests
Exposed internal organs
Glossy and dripping
With no beat
Their notes top secret
They presume

The results are in
Your irregular corners
Were not assembly-lined
The blemishes are here
Here and there and there
Foundation built on strange earth
Alien
This just cannot be allowed

And yet my results are also in
Strike normativity
Push this sick monoculture
Reshape its edges
Until it is unsightly
Enough to allow all shapes
And hold it open
Until the gatekeepers
Rigid antiquated beasts
Melt
Like wicked witches

A Spectacle’s Show

Spotlight and music
Watch her dance
Beats colouring her steps
Commanding movements
Musical notes take notice
Apparating mid-air
Bobbing to her rhythm

Watch the watchers
Hearts defibrillated
Desires syncopated
Eyes caught in her magnet
Some see the beating steps
Some follow the flowing curves
Some see the happy musical notes

Watch the spectacle
Of the spectacle
Unexpected social unison
Unrecognized merriment
A harmony of attentions
A chorus of consciousness
Beating to its own rhythm

The writing has paused

I’ve forgotten how to write,
The summer has been so bright,
And the creative well runs light,
Dear reader, I know, what a sight,
Excuse me while I take time to make this right.

Aftershocks

Those dark eyes
Still plummet the soul
Bracing, hoping for gentle waves
Or a well
But the only truth waiting
Is solid ground
Shocking pain
And we return
And become ourselves
