Gatekeepers

With its perpetual gatekeepers
Self-championing
Panicked by sights
Of difference
Their flat affect
Flummoxed breathing
Pens clawing at writing pads
Frantic, mad inspectors

“Cannot be allowed”
Are you looking?
Gasp
Writing pads jerked
Closer to their hollowed out chests
Exposed internal organs
Glossy and dripping
With no beat
Their notes top secret
They presume

The results are in
Your irregular corners
Were not assembly-lined
The blemishes are here
Here and there and there
Foundation built on strange earth
Alien
This just cannot be allowed

And yet my results are also in
Strike normativity
Push this sick monoculture
Reshape its edges
Until it is unsightly
Enough to allow all shapes
And hold it open
Until the gatekeepers
Rigid antiquated beasts
Melt
Like wicked witches

Be careful

Opening them one after the other
Like presents bearing their names
Outcomes a horizon away

Each one curiously tantalizing
Contents taken by their eyes
Or their minds
Feels like the caressing of hearts
Gentle hands radiating love
Be careful for who’s sake?

Cradled face in warm hands
Warmth seeking surrender
Predator, soul the prey
Lips mete the grandest of promises
Warm tears trace the lines
Of the past’s tracks
And fill drought-stricken valleys
Where nothing alive may persist
Floods are devoured
Cracked earth always return

Please have a care
One says to the other
These boxes
Exceedingly approachable
Little maelstroms

Notes

Quarter tonic
Sugar with sugar
Sweet tongue
Semolina Lena

Noncognizant strikes
Dodge brother, dodge
Relentless moving
Those dark eyes always worth it

What I would give
To make this right
To step out of character
Or am I in one now?

Tired of this
Fearing its endlessness
The closer I am to one
The farther I am from both

When the notes I hear
Or the words, dear
My world flips
But I’m quarter built

Flipping like it’s
Practice makes perfect
Play the notes, play
As close as I can get

Limits limit
But memories punish
Flabbergasted and expectant
What are you doing? Incredulous

I am flipping and practicing
Playing notes and replaying nostalgia
Giving love like watering the parched
Learning to strike the balance

Leave me be, demons
You turn sustenance into air
After I’ve fed my soul
I shall have my peace

Untitled

Eyes first meeting
Enchanted voice
Beauty and chaos
Delightful layers
Just a hint of tired
Well-hidden under a smile
Reaching out to soothe
What doesn’t appear to need it.

Not aware of depths
Counting breaths
How deep could they go?
Vanishing colours

The clouds passed
Resuscitation
And the sunshine
Sun-shone those depths
Unbalanced chaotic
Hurt with every stroke

They remember without connecting
At a standstill
A story ends
Without an ending

Look Up

Look up,
See the vastness,
Of our world,
Let your eyes swim in the sky blue,
And glide along the giant cotton balls,
The depth mesmerizes,
And dizzies.

Concrete recalls our attention,
Walls go up around our thoughts,
We look down,
And our world becomes resized,
To manageable compartments,
Defying even our imagination.

A meditation on the Present

The gates to heaven
Have always been wide open
For any to enter
There are no angels
Or saints waiting
You may walk right through
But don’t expect anything
Anyone can walk through
Only those who believe
They can make their own heaven
Are set free

There is a duality to this place
Those who walk through
The freely open doors
Expecting to be given
What was promised
Those never leave
Spending eternity in Paradise
They haunt and become haunted
The Rusty Gates are always open
But they aren’t capable
Of leaving
The hell they created for themselves

Depression

Unyielding,
Immoveable and dense,
Stuck in place,
A blank mind,
Submerged in quicksand.
